7 Steps to Recover from Setbacks and Disappointments

“Every setback has served to make you better.” In today’s episode, I explain the seven areas of your life that you CAN control and then gives some suggestions for how to cope with the things you simply can’t control. Everybody encounters setbacks and hardships, what defines us is how we cope and move forward when confronted with difficult times. If you’re in the middle of a hard time right now, then hopefully this will give you the small push you need to get you moving in the right direction.

The seven areas of your life that you can control:

  1. Behavior
  2. Attitude
  3. Who you spend time with
  4. How you are treated
  5. When to be the bigger person
  6. When to forgive
  7. Emotions

And that’s it! Everything else in your life is simply outside of your control and you’re going to need some coping mechanisms to make it through.

7 tips for for recovering from a setback:

1) It’s not personal – stop feeling sorry for yourself. There is nothing positive that comes from feeling sorry self-pity. In fact, when you feel sorry for yourself, you repel people from you. It’s like slowly poisoning yourself – it corrupts you.

2) Do acknowledge the pain of a setback.

Pretending that something doesn’t hurt you or cause you grief simply won’t do you any good in the long run. Acknowledge the pain so you can move on rather than repeatedly visiting the pain over and over again.

3) Don’t let trauma or setback define you.

You are much more than anything that happens TO you.

4) Find someone to talk to.

Talking to nobody just forces you to bottle everything up, but talking to everybody just forces you to revisit the trauma over and over and over agin. Find someone who you can confide in and who will keep you honest.

5) Review, Reflect, and Readjust.

No matter what happened, you need to review what happened, reflect on it (“What happened?”, “What could you have done differently?”), and then do you need to readjust – change how you behave or react in the future.

6) Create an action plan.

Ask yourself, “What do I need to do next?” If you don’t know, go online, find a support group, seek out therapy – whatever you need to do, get a plan!
