Cellulite FACTS vs MYTHS

There’s a lot of misinformation out there about cellulite. I was listening to a so-called “health” podcast where they were discussing ways to get rid of cellulite and it made me so angry! It’s not just that show, sadly, so I made an episode where I could set the facts straight about cellulite.

Here’s the point: You can do some work to diminish the appearance of cellulite, but if you’re eating well and working out and you’ve still got cellulite, then there’s nothing else you can do. And, you know what? So what!? That’s how God made you. Cellulite doesn’t mean that you’re ugly, because you are not – you’re beautiful! Don’t let society dictate to you how you should feel about yourself. It’s your body and your life and, again, you’re beautiful!

Women have to deal with cellulite and a lot of men have to deal with male-pattern baldness. That’s genetics. In fact, if your mother or grandmother didn’t have cellulite, you have a better chance of not having it yourself. The same thing goes for men and baldness. Not only will men inherent baldness from their fathers and grandfathers, but they’ll also start to lose their hair at the same age as them.

Cellulite is a skin issue like dry skin or stretch marks. It’s a part of your DNA. From birth, men and women develop their muscles in very different ways. That’s just a fact. Also, women who have higher levels of testosterone also tend to have less cellulite. Men who have higher levels of estrogen have a higher chance of experiencing cellulite. There’s nothing you can really do about it. (Are you getting the point yet?)

Additionally, cellulite can appear at various times in a woman’s life depending on their hormone levels. It can appear at puberty, after giving birth, and menopause – moments when estrogen levels change. So, there’s not much you can do about that physically, but just knowing that this can happen can help you appreciate your body and marvel at all of the things it can do.

Medical options

Okay, so what if you want to use some sort of medical treatment or procedure to get rid of cellulite? Well, here are some of my quick thoughts:

  • No cream, ointment, or oil can permanently reduce the appearance of cellulite.
  • No liposuction! This isn’t me railing against plastic surgery, but liposuction just never looks right.
  • Some people have had some success with VERY expensive laser treatment.

“Okay, Chalene, what CAN I do to help minimize cellulite?” Well, it’s pretty straightforward: Eat well. Exercise. Sleep. Take care of your body and your mind and you’ll minimize the appearance of cellulite. That’s it. You could still have some and that’s just the way it is. Don’t spend anymore time worrying about it.

Again, the takeaway here is that you should just accept that cellulite is something you can’t entirely get rid of. Just accept that it’s part of you and that it’s how God made you. Make sure you take care of yourself physically and emotionally and then enjoy your life!
