How To Focus In Your Business

share this:

Years after I graduated from college, I began to wonder why my hard work wasn’t paying off. I just wasn’t getting ahead nor moving anywhere near the direction I wanted to be at in my life. It was the same arduous routine, day after day. So tired hours before bedtime. And not at all inspired by many of my friends who were, to be frank, doing squat.

What I began to realize was, I truly didn’t know how to focus.

It was time to seek guidance in the area of personal development. The first expert I discovered in this broad industry was Brian Tracy.

And he was, perhaps, the greatest investment I ever made.

Mr. Tracy has three simple questions to ask yourself. These questions have changed the course of my career, my priorities, and so much more.

Let’s get to it, shall we!?

Question number ONE…

What is my highest value activity? Or activities.

You want to think about this first. Like, what are all the things you do? And, then, which of those has the highest value. By value, I mean no one else can do it. It brings to you financial reward. It moves you forward.

Once you think you’ve identified maybe three, even four, what I would like you to do is ask this same question to your partner or your husband or your own business mentor. Or ask somebody who’s been very successful in business and knows a little bit about what you do.

You need to be crystal clear about which of your activities produces the highest value. It’s imperative to know that answer on a weekly basis, a monthly basis, and on an annual basis.

The second question you must ask yourself constantly is…

What is the one thing that really only I can do?

Only YOU can do this. You can’t outsource it. Even if you could afford to outsource it. Again, what are the things that only you could do?

Answer this question by assuming you have an unlimited budget because it’s so easy think:

Well I’m the only one who can do this because I’m the only one who knows how to do this right now. Yeah, there are other people who could design my website. Sure, there are others who could proof-read my blog post. Of course, someone could edit my podcast. But I just can’t afford any of that right now.

I want you to pretend that you have an unlimited budget for outsourcing and hiring the perfect teammates. If that were the case, what is the one thing that really only you can do?

Here’s the third question:

What is the most valuable use of my time in this moment?

In the beginning stages of your business, you must ask yourself this question all the time because nothing in this moment is more valuable than your time. You must constantly repeat this question in your head or on paper! Every hour of every day. I can’t stress this enough.

Especially those of you who are building a business WHILE working full or part time jobs and/or have small children!

These three simple questions were not something I took lightly. They became my life and I put them into action.

Listen, Brian Tracy and I, some fifteen years later… became friends. I’ve had the honor to speak on his stage. And, guess what? He’s spoken on my stage. If you follow the advice of your mentors (the ones who are willing to share with you their answers), they will be there rooting for you. They want to see you succeed.

Well, I want to see you living your best life. So… are you going to put these questions into action today? Let me know in the comments! Thank you!
