What is success? It’s a question that society pretends to have answered.
Our culture would tell us that success is money, power, or fame. But, that’s not quite right.
While success is something that you have to define for yourself, I personally think that Tony Robbins said it best: “Success is doing what you want to do, when you want, where you want, with whom you want, as much as you want.”
In short, you need to have an understanding what success if for you. I mean, if you don’t have the answer, then how would you know if you ever get there? When I was younger, I made the mistake of picturing what success would look like, rather than what it FEELS like.
So, start there. What does success FEEL like to you?
Let’s pretend that your definition of success would be to run business in a giant high-rise building with 1000s of employees. That picture looks pretty good. However, what would that success FEEL like? You’ll have thousands of people who are depending on you to keep the money coming, to help them climb the corporate ladder, and to be on call. That can be fairly grueling. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t want this for yourself, but it’s important that you know what you’re getting yourself into.
If you start by defining goals and a definition of success that is focused on how you will feel, then you’ll feel more fulfilled in the end.
Well, here’s a way to get started:
Take a sheet of paper and write down a list of things you don’t want to feel. Here are some examples from my own list.
- I don’t like feeling like I can’t rest.
- I don’t like feeling like I can’t be myself.
- I don’t like feeling like I’m not in charge of my own schedule.
- I am unfulfilled when I feel like I am responsible for too many people’s happinessI don’t like playing politics.
After you’ve done that, make a list of the things you DO want to feel. Here are some of the items off of my list:
- I want my partner to feel like they’re right beside me.
- I want to enjoy my free time.
- I want to feel like I have enough financial security and not constantly chasing more.
- I want my children to feel safe, happy, and secure.
Okay! Once you’ve got your lists made, then come back and listen to the next episode. We’re going to use them to help define our success and set some goals for the future.
