In this episode of the Chalene Show, I talk to Steve Lepore, the Executive Director of 1in6.org – an organization whose goal is to help men who have had unwanted or abusive sexual experiences in childhood live healthier, happier lives.
Yes, this is a pretty serious episode, but the subject is all too common. Statistically speaking, only 1 in 6 men are survivors, consider that those numbers only represent the incidents which have been reported to authorities or reporting agencies. We can only imagine how high the actual number really is. This is about awareness and acceptance and helping the boys and men we love to free themselves of shame that they do not deserve to carry.

Steve LePore
Founder, Executive Director
Steve brings over 27 years experience in nonprofit management and consulting to 1in6, which he founded in January 2007. He originally worked in the private sector as Director of Human Resources for Six Flags Corporation and Landmark Entertainment Group. In 1988, Steve co-founded My Friend’s Place, a resource center for homeless and runaway youth in Hollywood, California and became its full-time Executive Director in 1990. In June 1999, he left My Friend’s Place to found the Santa Clarita Valley Youth Project, a community-based outreach program preventing high-risk behavior among students in his own neighborhood. Steve is a Durfee Foundation Stanton Fellow (having researched effective strategies to address difficult social issues and create change through program and policy development), serves on the advisory board of Take Back the Night and also served on the board of CALCASA (the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault).

The mission of 1in6 is to help men who have had unwanted or abusive sexual experiences in childhood live healthier, happier lives. Our mission also includes serving family members, friends, and partners by providing information and support resources on the web and in the community.
Why 1in6?
Researchers estimate that 1 in 6 men have experienced unwanted or abusive sexual experiences before age 18. This is likely a low estimate, since it doesn’t include noncontact experiences, which can also have lasting negative effects. If you’ve had such an experience, or think you might have, you are not alone.
