When Should You Hire a Bookkeeper?

share this:

Let’s say you’re a really creative person — a solopreneur maybe? — who has found a way to make money (like, there’s a surplus at the end of every month), but numbers are not your thing. And you know you need some organization and structure before it’s time to file your taxes. Where do you start? Who do you hire? A bookkeeper, accountant, CFO?

Need Organization in Your Business So Hire a Bookkeeper

Start with a Bookkeeper.

If your brain doesn’t go there with the numbers, then you have to hire a bookkeeper NOW and an accountant down the road. (The accountant, eventually, will take and use what your bookkeeper does and figure it all out).

You need a bookkeeper who is so meticulous that they’ll break everything out for you — in such a way that it’ll be absolutely glaring where your profits are and where you’re struggling.

And if this is you…

“But I’m trying to come up with all the creativity and I just don’t have the time or the money to hire a bookkeeper right now, so I will when I can afford to.”

…let me give you some tough love: You’re probably not an entrepreneur.

Hence, you should just go work for somebody else. Because if you’re in this to make money for yourself — so that you could have the luxuries and freedom of an entrepreneur — you have to slow down, get yourself a bookkeeper and let them help you.

A True Entrepreneur will Hire a Bookkeeper for Help

At first, this might cost you a bit more money because said bookkeeper will have to figure out all your books (see what I did there?). So sure, the first few weeks might be comparatively more expensive.

However, most likely, initially, it’ll only take them just a couple of hours, maybe a week, to handle all your receipts and your books.

And then… you’ll have this nice little spreadsheet and realize quickly where you’re spending way too much money (or not enough).

I mean, my husband and I run many businesses (several that are 8-figures) — with a lot of employees — and our bookkeeper is able to get things done in 5 to 7 hours a week (because she has learned and understands our business).

The right bookkeeper will legitimately make your money back tenfold!

But how do you find the right one?
