Why adaptability is key to success as an entrepreneur

While adaptability is, perhaps, the most important ability for success as an entrepreneur, it’s not often talked about. In actuality, you rarely hear it mentioned. Instead, much of the advice thrown to entrepreneurs revolves around the sentiment of never give up.

  • Keep grinding!
  • Hustle, hustle, hustle!
  • Dig deeper!

Adaptability Key Success as an Entrepreneur Even if The Prevailing Wisdom Is that Hustle is the Most Important

There’s this really big narrative in entrepreneurship and in business owning that you just keep pushing and never give in. And to a certain extent, that’s noble and true.

However, adaptability — the ability to adapt, to change, the willingness to pivot — is a far more important skill to have for any business owner or entrepreneur.

Why Adaptability is Key To Success As An Entrepreneur

If you’re willing to change and adapt as a business owner, it means, oftentimes, your ego has been removed from your decision-making. See, usually, what prevents us from pivoting is our ego standing in the way, saying:

“I’m not going to follow the market or my audience or what statistics or trends or forecasts are predicting. No, what I’m doing is right!”

But if we put our ego aside, we’re able to see things so much clearer and from a much more objective point of view. And that is when we can discern and recognize that change might be necessary.

Literally, for that reason alone, I think adaptability is extremely undervalued in entrepreneurship. It’s a critical skill that should be referenced and talked about and praised far more.

The Skill Adaptability Talked About More In Business Circles

Now, you’re never going to have the ability to adapt or change or pivot or know something is wrong unless… you first get started.

I can’t even imagine how different my life would be if I hadn’t 1) just gotten started and 2) been willing to adapt to crazy changes in my business(es) over the years. Failures and all.

One major thing that I think inhibits our ability to adapt to change is fear of that change. Even if we’re uncomfortable with our current state.
