How To Overcome Fear of Aging

share this:

As per usual, before I set out to write a new blog or record a new podcast, I head to my Instagram family and take a poll. Well, for today’s blog, the question was for the ladies and it centered around aging.

When you think about aging, who do you worry about most — men or women?

At the time of this writing, 70% of over 4,000 respondents said they worry (fear, if you will) what other women think of them.

Women Fear Aging More with The Same Sex

I think that’s fascinating because — in researching the topic of aging — most of the…

  • social commentary
  • videos

…tend to place the blame squarely on the shoulders of men. Like, it’s because men desire younger females and view them as more attractive. But if 70% of women (yes, according to my poll — but it’s a decent sample size) are more concerned with what other women think, is it really the guy’s fault that so many of us are obsessed with aging?

Or maybe it’s the fault of advertising and marketing. I mean, who is:

  • buying those products that tell us youth is better?
  • obsessed with looking younger?
  • far more likely to comment on someone’s looks (i.e., looking older, bigger, etc.)?

It’s the women.

Now, I’m not saying that all women do this, and I’m certainly not saying that men never do it.

But I do think we have to start with ourselves and think about the reality we’ve created and how we can shift it.

Aging is a Mindset and you can Shift that Reality to Overcome Fear

I have avoided saying this out loud because we’ve been told that the opposite is true.

But I’ve reached a point where I feel that it may be of service to other women by putting this out there.

At the risk of sounding arrogant or boastful… here goes…

I am 52 years young and most days I feel prettier and more attractive than I was in my 20’s, 30’s and 40’s.

Look, if you’ve decided that because of aging you’ll be less…

  • attractive
  • interesting
  • valuable

… then THAT will be your reality.

The idea of aging is so often just that… an idea. A mental state.

You can be 25 and feel like you’re getting old or 65 and feel young as can be.

Aging Is a Mental State No Matter How Old You Are Overcome Fear

So, how does one overcome the fear of aging?

By understanding that you have the ability and, in fact, the responsibility to change the way you view aging. And it starts with the story you’re telling yourself.

In The Chalene Show below, I give you a small dose of tough love — and some encouragement — because there is absolutely no reason to feel depressed or anxious or dread over the aging process!

I’m certain that if you have any concerns in regard to getting older, this episode will leave you feeling more positive and all-around so much better!
