One of the biggest issues with time management is not focusing on priority tasks and instead completing secondary tasks that don’t have as much weight. These 5 steps will help you stage a time management reset. Following each step, you can refocus your energy into what really needs to get done, instead of putting it off for other things.
- Admit it’s time for a reset
The first step to change is admitting that you have a problem. In my case I know I need a reset when I’m keeping myself up at night thinking about what I should have gotten done that day, and loading up my to-do list with things from yesterday. Admit you need a reset by stating it aloud, or posting on social media. This will also help keep you accountable to resetting and working on bettering your skills.
- Recognize and identify your Achilles Heel
Step two is identifying those things that are slowing you down and getting in the way of progress. You may have more than one thing taking your attention away from priority tasks; I call these things destination procrastination because all it takes it to open Facebook or Twitter and soon a half hour has passed. Recognizing where you seem to “waste” time is necessary if you’re going to have better time management skills in the future.
- Getting back on track
Now that you know where your time sucks are it’s time to write down what really needs to get done each day, those are your priorities. For the next seven days you’ll be creating a to-do list of the 5-10 top things you’d like to accomplish. I like to write mine the night before so they don’t keep me up, but it also works to write them out first thing in the morning. Of those 5 or 10 things, pick 3 that are top priority, I mean they must be completed today. These are where your focus will be, and if you get through these three things consider your day a success. You can’t do everything every day so it’s good to focus on the big things and work from there.
- Use your phone
I know your cellphone can be a procrastination tool so I’m going to help you there as well. On the home screen on your phone you should only have one app, your to-do list app. This will help you focus on your daily list and will keep you away from the social media and email. Keeping your to-do list on your phone will mean you’ll have it with you everywhere and can focus on what matters most.
Finally, you need to hold yourself accountable to this reset. You know you need to change your ways so what better way than to tell someone else who will ask you about it later. Announce your change on social media. Another great way is to tell someone close to you to kindly remind you to get back on track when they see you doing things like scrolling Instagram or Facebook.
