Why Are You On Social Media?
Social media has become a part of everyone’s lives. It’s like we’re always attached to our phones, either looking at the screen or waiting for it to buzz for the millionth time. Between email, texting, and apps it’s a wonder we still call it a phone. Checking things like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram has become part of our daily lives, but while we’re checking all of these things do we understand why? Why are you on social media anyway? Is it for entertainment, community, or even for your business? I’m hoping that I can help you think about why you’re on social media, and maybe even help you change how you interact online.
Chances are you probably joined Facebook and Twitter for entertainment. You wanted to see what the hype was about and what everyone couldn’t seem to get enough of. Now that you’re there the daily updates are probably from your friends and family, with things like baby pictures and life events. But there are also tons of updates about what’s for dinner, who won the baseball game, and what the weather is going to be like tomorrow. Social media is a mass of knowledge about anything and everything. When you check in, you see everyone’s updates and maybe even share a few yourself. That’s entertaining, checking in with everyone, but it also can be very passive. You can be on Facebook for twenty minutes and never send a message or like a post. Instead, why not add value to your posts as well as to your community? You aren’t getting those twenty minutes back so why not use them for good instead of just passive down time?
It may seem odd that you can actually add value with a tweet or post, but you can. You have knowledge, skills, and passion so why not share that with your online communities? Think about it; if you’re great in the kitchen why not share your recipes so others can cook your favorite dishes. Have a bad experience on vacation or in your business? Learn from it and share it with the world instead of keeping it to yourself. Chances are there are people who can benefit from your skills and want to hear what you have to say. You already have a platform for sharing your knowledge, all that’s left is to take the plunge and post it. Next time you’re on Facebook or Twitter try to comment on a post and share something that can add value. If someone has a question, try to answer it or chime in that you too were wondering about that. Connecting with your community will further your ability to share, instead of just checking in passively.
Social media has become a place of constant entertainment and passive voice. It seems like we’re always looking and never sitting still, listening, or even sharing. On social media make it a habit to share your strengths and experiences instead of perusing the pages and leaving. You’ll add value and strengthen your community as well as your contacts and presence within social media.
